MX Test

MX tells senders which server should receive email for you.

About MX

An MX record tells senders which server receives email for your domain. Its priority value determines the order when there is more than one server.

A correct MX record is necessary for mail sent to you to reach the right provider. Incorrect or unreachable records can delay or lose delivery.

How do I fix MX?

  1. Enter the MX records recommended by your email provider in DNS, with their full names and priorities.
  2. Remove records left by an old provider or containing a typo.
  3. After the change, check the domain again and send a test message from an external address.

Frequently asked questions

What happens when there is no MX record?

Some servers try delivery to the domain's A or AAAA record. That is not a reliable mail setup, so publish an explicit MX record.

Do I need more than one MX record?

One record can work. If your provider supplies more than one, add all of them with the recommended priorities for redundancy.

Why does the smaller priority value go first?

For MX, a smaller number has higher priority. The sending server tries it first and moves to the next record if it cannot connect.
